House extensions · Berwick-upon-Tweed · Old Farm Building
The conversion of an old farm building into an extension of an existing home, creating additional living space while retaining the traditional character of the original structure. The project focused on bringing a former agricultural building into residential use through sympathetic alterations and modern construction methods.

The main challenge was adapting an ageing agricultural building into a comfortable and practical living space while preserving its original features. Careful consideration was required to address the condition of the existing stonework, structural stability, insulation, damp protection and the connection between the farm building and the main house.
The project involved converting the existing farm building into additional residential accommodation. Works included repairs and alterations to the original structure, improvements to the stonework, installation of insulation, roofing and flooring upgrades, and internal finishing. The building was connected to the existing house to create a functional extension of the living space.
Traditional and modern materials were considered to ensure the conversion complemented the original building. Existing natural stonework was retained where practical, with sympathetic mortar and matching stone used for repairs. Modern insulation, suitable roofing materials, glazing and internal finishes were incorporated to improve comfort and make the building suitable for everyday use.
The former farm building was converted into additional living accommodation, making use of an existing structure rather than constructing an entirely new extension. The conversion retained the agricultural character of the original building while providing practical space connected to the main home.
