Garage conversions · Cramlington · 1990s detached house
A garage conversion project in Cramlington, Northumberland, designed to transform an existing garage into a comfortable and practical family room. The aim was to make better use of the available space while creating a natural extension of the home's existing living accommodation.

The main challenge was converting a space originally designed for vehicle storage into a warm, comfortable and functional living area. This required consideration of insulation, flooring, ventilation, natural light and how the converted garage would connect with the rest of the property.
The conversion work involved adapting the existing garage structure for residential use, including alterations to the garage opening, internal insulation, wall and ceiling finishes, flooring and electrical installations. The space was prepared to function as an additional family room, with attention given to comfort and integration with the existing house.
Materials were selected to provide durability, thermal efficiency and a finish consistent with the main property. Insulated wall and ceiling systems, suitable flooring materials, plasterboard and modern glazing were considered to create a comfortable internal environment while complementing the home's existing appearance.
The garage conversion created additional usable living space within the existing footprint of the property. The converted area provides a dedicated family room without requiring a new extension, making practical use of an existing part of the home.
