Roof insulation upgrades

Upgrading roof and loft insulation – including rooms in the roof and sloping ceilings – with the ventilation needed to avoid condensation.

Roof Insulation Upgrades Northumberlan

Heat rises, and a poorly insulated roof is one of the biggest sources of heat loss in a house. Topping up loft insulation is simple, but many Northumberland homes have trickier roofs: rooms in the roof, sloping ceilings, dormers and older slate roofs with no membrane.

Options

  • Cold roof – insulating at ceiling level with a ventilated loft above.
  • Warm roof – insulating at rafter level so the loft space is inside the warm envelope, often during re-roofing.
  • Room-in-roof – insulating sloping ceilings, dwarf walls and flat sections, which often needs ceilings taking down or work from outside.

Condensation risk

Insulation changes how moisture moves. Without the right ventilation or vapour control, condensation can form on the cold side and damage timbers. We design the ventilation to suit the roof type and covering.

Roof insulation upgrades: common questions

How much loft insulation do I need?

Current guidance for lofts is around 270 mm of mineral wool or equivalent, but the right amount depends on the roof and how it is ventilated.

Can I still store things in the loft?

Yes, with raised loft legs and boarding so insulation is not squashed.

Is it worth insulating when re-roofing?

Yes. Re-roofing is the ideal time to add rafter insulation, and building regulations may require it if a large part of the roof is renewed.
