Suspended timber floor insulation

Insulating suspended timber ground floors to cut draughts and heat loss – while keeping the ventilation underneath that protects the joists.

Suspended Timber Floor Insulation

Many older Northumberland houses have suspended timber ground floors: boards on joists over a ventilated void. They can be cold and draughty, with air rushing up through gaps between boards and skirtings.

How we insulate them

  1. Check the void – ventilation, ground conditions and the state of the joists and sleeper walls.
  2. Lift boards carefully (or work from below where there is a deep void).
  3. Fit insulation between the joists, supported on netting or battens – often wood fibre or mineral wool, which stay breathable.
  4. Add an airtight but vapour-open layer where suitable and seal gaps at the edges.
  5. Relay the boards and keep the air bricks clear.

Do not block the ventilation

The void under a timber floor must stay ventilated to keep the joists dry. Insulation goes between the joists; air bricks and sleeper wall openings stay clear.

Timber floor insulation: common questions

Can original floorboards be kept?

Yes. We lift and number boards so they go back in the same place, replacing only damaged ones.

Will it stop draughts?

Insulation plus sealing gaps at the skirtings and between boards makes a big difference to draughts.

What if the joists are rotten?

We repair decayed joists and fix the cause, such as blocked air bricks or high ground levels, before insulating.
