Repairing sandstone walls, quoins, sills and dressings – replacing decayed stone, rebuilding loose sections and keeping the building's character.

Sandstone gives Northumberland's towns and farms their character, from honey-coloured Hexham terraces to grey coastal cottages. Stone is durable, but not everlasting: it weathers, especially when water is trapped by cement pointing, failed gutters or poorly detailed repairs.
We repair rather than replace wherever we can, and only cut out stone that has genuinely failed. Replacement stone is chosen to match the original in type, colour and bedding direction, then indented into the wall, bedded and pointed in lime. Where whole sections are loose, we take them down carefully, record how they were built and rebuild with the same stones where possible. We also look for the cause – a leaking gutter or blocked downpipe – so the problem does not return.
Repairs on a listed building or in a conservation area can need consent if they change appearance or materials. Like-for-like repairs are often fine, but check with the council first.
Sometimes. Minor damage can be left or dressed back, and some areas suit a lime-based mortar repair. Badly decayed stone is best cut out and replaced with matching new stone.
From quarries producing similar sandstone, or from reclaimed stone. We bring samples to compare before ordering.
Usually trapped moisture – often from cement pointing, render or leaking rainwater goods – combined with frost. Fixing the cause is as important as repairing the stone.
